A new poolside hoist has been installed at Portlaoise Leisure Centre, a council meeting was told.
Labour Councillor Marie Tuohy tabled a motion in relation to the hoist which was seconded by Sinn Fein Councillor Caroline Dwane Stanley.
Cllr Tuohy had asked "that this Council examine the lack of access to the swimming pool for those who need assistance getting in and out of the pool at Laois Leisure, Portlaoise."
A written response by Director of Services, Donal Brennan was read at the meeting.
He stated that “Laois County Council supported the installation on 8th March 2023 of a new poolside hoist at Portlaoise Leisure Centre which will greatly improve access to the pool.”
Cllr Tuohy welcomed the move and said swimming is more than just exercise, it can be part of physical therapy for people with disabilities.
“I am a little bit disappointed that the pool has been open almost a year and that there hasn’t been that service available,” she remarked.
“I am hoping that suitable changing facilities are also available, Cllr Tuohy added.
Cllr Dwane Stanley welcomed the introduction of the “long overdue” lift.
“I am shocked to see it has taken so long,” she remarked.
