Illegal dumping appears to have descended to a new low in Laois with a claim that the contents of a septic tank were pumped and dumped onto the site of the Festival of the Mountain in Rosenallis.

The revelation emerged at a meeting of public representatives and Laois County Council officials in County Hall Portlaoise when Cllr Seamus McDonald called upon the council to act to warn the public not to dump.

The Fianna Fáil representative explained what had happened.

"Would you believe that a couple of weeks ago someone unloaded the contents of a septic tank. It is a disgrace what took place - it is very disrespectful," he said.

He hoped that the signs, which the council agreed to erect, would make a difference.

Cllr McDonald told the Leinster Express / Laois Live that locals had also discovered used nappies in the dumping. He said he did not believe the matter had been officially reported.

The Festival of the Mountain first took place in 1962 and has been running as a community celebration that has drawn people from far and wide to the scenic site in the heart of the Laois Offaly mountains since then.

The matter was raised at the April meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory Moutmellick Municipal District in County Hall Portlaoise.
