A speed ramp is needed on a “dangerous” stretch of road near a Laois playground.

Fianna Fail Councillor Paschal McEvoy requested the ramp in a motion at the latest meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.

He asked: “That this Council install a speed ramp at the Heritage Centre, Timahoe to slow traffic approaching the children’s playground.”

In response, Senior Executive Engineer, Philip McVeigh said,  “Laois County Council will arrange to meet with the Elected Member on site to confirm the scope of works required.”

“You are not saying you are going to put a ramp there,” Cllr McEvoy noted on hearing the response.

He said it was something that needs to be done as children were going in their “droves” to the playground, Cllr McEvoy said.

“It is very dangerous,” he said.

Agreeing with his party colleague, Cllr Padraig Fleming said action was needed at the location.

“You are coming down a hill and the cars come fast there,” he explained.

Cllr McEvoy said there was an urgency about getting the work done as children were due to finish school.
