The Rock National School is located on a busy road near Mountmellick.
A ramp is needed at The Rock NS near Mountmellick to slow traffic because of the risk faced by children a county councillor has insisted.
Cllr Paddy Bracken, Fianna Fáil, made the demand on Laois County Council officials at a recent meeting in County Hall Portlaoise.
Making the appeal Cllr Bracken said such a measure had already been implemented in Emo and because of the need and The Rock is no different.
His motion asked that the Council carry out road safety measures.
James Dowling, Senior Executive Engineer, Road Design Office, replied in writing.
“The road design office is currently investigating options at this location. The existing speed radar is to be relocated, road lining to be refreshed. The situation will be reviewed following the implementation of these measures,” he said.
However, Cllr Bracken didn’t believe this goes far enough. He made clear what was needed and why.
“The big need for the parents of the school kids is a ramp. It is a very narrow road and the speed is frightening. There is great concern. It is shocking actually,” said Cllr Bracken.
He added: “A ramp has been installed in Emo so I can’t see why a ramp can’t be installed”.
He said many children attend the school and there are also issues with parking.
“The situation is now urgent and with the schools closed there is a chance to do something before September,” he said.
The issue was raised at the recent Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Mountmellick Municipal District meeting.
