Portlaoise hospital has new look as HSE explains offsite parking is needed

Portlaoise Hospital has a new look and explains why it has had to resort to offsite parking

The new look at the main entrance to Portlaoise hospital has been revealed after reconfiguration to create what the HSE intended would create a more comfortable environment for patients, visitors and staff.

The HSE has also outlined why it has to find space outside the Laois hospital's grounds to find more car parking spaces at the busy facility.

Work began on the main entrance in early 2023 when the HSE outlined the work being carried out to the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

It said the entrance hall of Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise would be reorientated main a change of location for the reception desk and Admissions Office.

It said the main entrance doors would also be improved by extending the entry space into the lobby - "resulting in a more comfortable environment for all patients, visitors and staff."  The work has necessitated a new sign over the entrance. MORE ON PARKING BELOW PICTURE.

Separately, the HSE also confirmed the reason for applying for planning permission from Laois County Council for a 106 temporary car park for the hospital offsite on lands attached to St Fintan’s Hospital off the Block Road.

"The hospital has increased the offering for parking for patients on the hospital grounds. They now require additional parking for Staff. The hospital hopes this would alleviate the pressure on car parking for the general public who come to the hospital for appointments/visiting during the course of the day," it said.

A number of new car parks have been added to the Portlaoise hospital campus in recent years but none have satisfied the demand for parking. The existing and new spillover car parks are regularly packed to capacity.

Work is also ongoing on a new Respiratory Assessment Unit, an extension to the Paediatric Unit and additional accommodation at ground floor and first floor.
