Laois haulier Ger Hyland has been elected President of the Irish Road Haulage Association.

A vocal advocate of the haulage industry, Ger operates Hyland Transports in Rosenallis in the Slieve Bloom Mountains.

He has been prominent in highlighting industry concerns in the media in recent times. Hyland Transport were also involved in bringing aid to Ukraine when war broke out last year.

Independent Laois Offaly TD Carol Nolan welcomed his appointment.

“It was fantastic to see Ger elected to this vitally important national role. I have no doubt that his time in the role will be marked with distinction and dedication to all members of the Association who work night and day to keep local and national supply lines open,” she said.

“This has not been easy and indeed the haulage sector continues to face challenging issues including the rise in excise duty which disproportionately impacts industries of its kind.

I was also delighted to have been invited to attend the IRHA’s recent conference in Killarney. There, the necessity of maintaining a robust and viable haulage sector was made absolutely clear and that is something I remain passionately committed to in terms of political representation for the sector, the drivers and their families,” said Deputy Nolan.

“Haulage is at the centre of any functioning economic life as thousands of businesses depend on its ability to maintain their operations. Government must work to assist the sector rather than create circumstances which make it more difficult to survive,” she said.

“I want to acknowledge the magnificent work and the outcomes achieved by Ger’s predecessor Eugene Drennan. Eugene fought the good fight for his members and his dedication will not be forgotten,” she added.
