Laois Offaly Chief Superintendent Anthony Lonergan was asked to consider installing average speed cameras in Laois.
The speed cameras take an image of a vehicle at two points on a stretch of road and work out the average speed it was travelling.
Independent Cllr James Kelly said he believed the cameras would deter speeders in Laois.
He said pilot schemes in Dublin Port Tunnel and in Birdhill in Tipperary had proved successful.
“We all know about the crashes and speeding that’s going on at the moment. Is there any application to put one of these speed over distance cameras in the county of Laois. I think it would make a big difference,” he remarked.
“We have all heard of the tragic fatalities that have been on our roads over the last number of weeks. We are all aware that road deaths are currently up on the same period last year,” Chief Supt Lonergan replied.
“I believe it is more than policing. It is about education, awareness etc. but from an enforcement perspective no, I haven’t had an opportunity,” he said.
Chief Supt Lonergan said speeding is an issue that gardai will be focusing on in the division.

The matter was discussed at the latest Laois Joint Policing Committee meeting in Portlaoise last week.
