'No drainage, no nothing' - in Laois town’s Celtic Tiger estate

No drainage, no nothing - in Laois town’s estate

Houses completed but supporting infrastructure absent claims councillor

Major work is needed in a Celtic Tiger era housing estate in Mountmellick according to a public representative who says there is no drainage to prevent flooding.

Cllr Paddy Bracken, Fianna Fáil, shone a light on the problems facing residents of Cullenbeg at a recent meeting with Laois County Council.

He tabled a motion calling on the council to provide drainage to relieve the flooding in the residential area.

“There is no proper drainage at all in the area,” was Cllr Bracken’s stark summation.

He continued: “It needs major work to address that”.

Edmond Kenny, District Engineer, replied in writing.

“Laois County Council will inspect the existing drainage infrastructure at this site to determine the cause of the flooding issues. A level survey will be undertaken at the site to identify a possible drainage outfall to solve this issue,” he said.

The issue was raised at the September meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District meeting.
