The Abbeyleix Senior Hurlers were praised at a meeting of Laois County Council.
Fianna Fail Cllr John Joe Fennelly congratulated the hurlers on reaching their first Senior Final in 74 years.
“I think it is well worth a vote of congratulations,” he told the meeting.
Fianna Fail Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald concurred. She said it was great for Abbeyleix but also great for hurling and the county. She had particular praise for the Abbeyleix goalkeeper.
Fine Gael Cllr Barry Walsh and Independent Cllr Ollie Cooney also praised the team.
Fine Gael Cllr John King also praised the hurlers and he too was impressed with Abbeyleix’s goalkeeper.
“He should be in the Olympics, an outstanding player,” he commented.
