A serious accident near Portlaoise has caused Laois gardaí to alert the public to expect traffic delays on one of the busiest national routes through the county.
Gardaí say the single-car collision occurred on Friday, November 17 between midday and 1 pm on the N80 in the Ballymacken area. The man who is driving the car is understood to be in a critical condition after his vehicle left the road.
Emergency services were called to the scene and have put in place a stop-go system at the crash site near Laois Sawmills and other businesses on the Portlaoise to Stradbally stretch of the N80.
The road did not immediately close but Gardaí may have to do so. Motorists were advised to avoid using the road if possible. If not drivers have been warned to expect delays on what is the main road between Carlow and Laois.
Gardaí are continuing to investigate the cause of the collision.
