Overgrown trees in Clonaslee are leaving the area around the health centre in darkness despite the existence of a street light.

Cllr Conor Bergin, Fine Gael, made the claim at a meeting with Laois County Council officials in Portlaoise.

“People are going out walking in the evenings and it’s got to a point where the lights are completely overgrown. It could be easily fixed. When people go out in the evenings people need footpaths; they need lights,” he said.

His party colleague Cllr John King said there is a similar problem in Rathdowney.

James Dowling, Senior Executive Engineer for Roads, replied in writing to Cllr Bergin’s motion.

“Laois County Council will carry out a site visit to assess the overgrowth and will carry out tree trimming should it be required,” he said.

The issue was raised at the Borris-in-Ossory Moutmellick Municipal District meeting n December.
