100km run around Portlaoise in aid of ASD classes in local school

A LAOIS resident is taking on a 100km run around Portlaoise to raise funds for the Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) classes in his local school.

Kevin Keyes will run, jog, walk, and crawl the distance to raise much needed funds for Tobair an Léinn Primary School in Raheen.

Speaking to Leinster Express/Laois Live this week Kevin explained how the fundraiser came about.

"I am hoping to raise funds for the two ASD classes. Between the two classes there are 12 boys and girls with autism, which affects them in a variety of different ways. The school is waiting on their department issue build and are currently operating out of prefabs," said Kevin.

"A friend of mine suggested that I raise some money for a local cause, and I wanted it to be for something local and where the results of raising this money could be physically witnessed. Tobair an Léinn is ten minutes away from me, and when talking to one of the teachers up there this is where the idea for the playground equipment came up.

"I would love to help the school buy some swings, a climbing frame and a soft floor space for landing. Any donation that could be made would be greatly appreciated and would make for a better, safer and more fulfilling a day for these children."

Kevin is originally from Waterford but has been living in Raheen parish for the last few years. He is no stranger to taking on challenges and has competed ultra marathon races in Wicklow and Kilkenny in the past.

His 100km run will be undertaken around Portlaoise on March 16 but his exact route is yet to be finalised.
