An Post had no choice but to close the Durrow Post Office branch service but it is committed to reopening when a new location and licence holder can be found.

The company confirmed to the Leinster Express / Laois Live that the Durrow branch would close temporarily on Friday, March 8.

It said that in the interim we will transfer customers to Abbeyleix Post Office about 8.9 kms away. It outlined efforts made to avoid closure.

“We have been attempting to find a new postmaster to provide post office services in Durrow for some time but with no success. We advertised the contract a number of times and also canvassed the local businesses but again were unable to find a new contractor

“We have no alternative at this stage but to close the office on a temporary basis and continuing with local retailers to see if there is a viable option in the future. The building that current houses the Post Office is being sold and has to be vacated in March,” it said.

The company issued the statement after Laois Offaly TD and Minister Seán Fleming revealed that the service would be suspended. He hopes it will reopen.

“They are continuing the efforts to appoint a Postmaster and they are hopeful that the service will be restored soon.
"I will keep in contact with An Post and the Minister on this very important issue for Durrow. It is vital that a Post Office be re-opened for the people and community in Durrow as soon as possible," he said.

Durrow-based Cllr Ollie Clooney said was confident that the closure temporary. He said he was "100% sure” that it would reopen giving an estimated timeframe of a month.

The independent county councillor told the Leinster Express / Laois Live that a local shop is in advanced talks to take up the contract.

It is understood that the talks that have taken place with a local business person have been productive but the process has yet to yield a definitive agreement

In 2021 Bank of Ireland announced the closure of the Durrow branch. At the time An Post said a new new partnership with the bank would see personal and SME withdrawal and lodgement services to Bank of Ireland customers across the An Post post office network.

The town was also hit last year with the news that the local Credit Union opening hours would be curtailed.
