The family amendment referendum has been defeated in the Laois Offaly constituency with more than 75% voting no.
There was a 44% turnout in the Laois Offaly constituency with 48,479 valid votes cast, 11,776 in favour of the family amendment which proposed extending the meaning of family beyond one defined by marriage and to include those based on “durable” relationships. Some 36,703 no votes were cast.
Nationally more than 67% of the country voted no in the family amendment referendum while counting is still ongoing for the care referendum which proposed deleting references to a woman’s roles and duties in the home, and replacing it with a new article that acknowledges family carers.
Earlier today Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said it was clear that the two referendums were “defeated comprehensively”.
