Part of Laois road that’s deteriorating by the day is in line for repair this year if a draft plan is adopted.

Cllr Aisling Moran, Independent, called on Laois County Council resurface the road from Castletown to Cullenagh Cross at a recent meeting in County Hall Portlaoise.

Paul McLoughlin, Senior Engineer, replied in writing.

“A 1 km section of the L3978 is included for consideration in the draft Portarlington Graiguecullen roadworks programme for 2024,” he said.

Cllr Moran welcomed the response but warned that it must happen soon the repairs should be more extensive.

“This road is getting worse by the day sides have completely gone,” she said.

Cllr Moran added that potholes are being constantly repaired and she also hoped that repairs could be carried out beyond the 1km stretch identified by the local authority.

James Dowling, Senior Executive Engineer, replied that many roads are being considered for repairs. He added that the repairs are limited by budget and not distance.

Cllr Moran hoped that the worst section could be addressed first with the remainder repaired in 2025.

“It’s very hard to say the worst because it’s all bad,” she said.

Cllr Padraig Fleming, Fianna Fáil, backed her and said a plan needs to be drawn up to address a lot of major issues on roads.

The issue was raised at the Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District meeting.
