A conference to be held in Portlaoise in May will look at historic settlement in Laois.
The event is being organised by the Group Study of Irish Historic Settlement in association with Laois Heritage Society.
The three day conference will take place from Friday to Sunday, May 10 to 12 in the Killeshin Hotel.
The keynote speaker will be Arnold Horner and he will discuss 'Representing the Laois area on maps, c.1560-c.1840.
'Eoin O'Sullivan will speak about 'The prehistoric monuments of the Great Heath, Portlaoise - are they hiding in plain sight?Thomas Nelligan will discuss Old Kyle Cemetery and the search for St Molua's Bell.
The speakers will also include Mairtin Dalton who will discuss the maps of Leix and Offaly and Regina Dunne will speak about The Helen Rose Collection in Laois Local Studies. The event will include a field trip to Cosby Hall and Dunamase Castle.
The final day of the conference will see the Annual General Meeting of the Group for the Study of Irish Historic Settlement take place followed by more discussion topics.
Barry O'Reilly will speak about the Vernacular Settlement of County Laois, John Colclough will discuss the lesser country houses of Laois and John Beattie will look at the 20th century architecture of Portlaoise.
The weekend will finish off with a walking tour of Portlaoise to include the Helen Roe Archive and Fort Protector.
