Drive-through Laois roundabout ‘serves no purpose’

Sinn Féin councillor claims it does not slow traffic

Drive-through Laois roundabout ‘serves no purpose’

Ballymorris Road Portarlington

A Portlarlington roundabout is ignored by drivers resulting in it serving no purpose in slowing traffic, a Laois councillor has claimed.

Cllr Aidan Mullins, Sinn Féin, made the claim after tabling a motion calling on Laois County Council to propose a programme of works for the upgrade of the roundabout at Ballymorris Road as previously discussed.

Cllr Mullins was frustrated by the delay in getting the work done despite having he met council officials on a number of times and seen surveys completed.

He claimed motorists are driving through the roundabout which is not located in the centre of the road. Cllr Mullins said the traffic surveys have shown that it does not slow traffic.

“It doesn’t serve much of a purpose,” he said.

Cllr PJ Kelly, Fine Gael, supported his colleague.

James Dowling, Senior Executive Engineer,  replied that the Council Road’s Deparment isorganising a topographical survey which is required to inform a detailed design of the roundabout. He said the topographical survey is to be completed in the coming weeks.

The issue was raised at the recent Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District Meeting.
