An unusual volunteering opportunity which might really appeal to steam and rail enthusiasts is on offer in Stradbally.
Ireland’s first volunteer run railway, the Stradbally Woodland Railway, has put a call out for volunteers to help out with general maintenance and operation of the attraction.
“We're not looking for any specific skills in volunteers as plenty of training is provided, all you need is the enthusiasm to get stuck in. There's absolutely no requirement for an existing interest in steam engines or railways either.
We have a host of different tasks on offer including maintaining our engines and track, learning to be a guard on and drive our steam and diesel trains, working in the shop selling tickets and snacks and drinks on open days, manning the platform when the train is running, the list goes on. Our volunteers work on both our public open days as well as our behind the scenes working days that generally take place on weekends and some weekdays,” a spokesperson said.

“Anyone who would be interested in getting involved, learning new skills and becoming part of our team will be welcomed with open arms and plenty of tea! We encourage people to email us on stradballyrailway@gmail.com or message any of our social media pages to find out more. Membership of the Irish Steam Preservation Society, which runs the railway and organises the annual National Steam Rally in Stradbally, is just €10 a year. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times while participating until they turn 18.”
Stradbally Woodland Railway is holding an Open Day on the Sunday and Monday of the May Bank Holiday, May 5 and 6.
All the railway's 2024 open dates can be found on our website at irishsteam.net.
