Laois disappointment at losing to Fermanagh in Longford in the final group game of the Tailteann Cup has been eased with confirmation that the O'Moore men have made it through to the competition's knockout stages.

The one-point loss in Longford to the Ulster team means the county's senior footballers finish second place in Group 3 of the Tailteann Cup.

Laois qualification for the knock-out stages of the tier two Gaelic football championship was confirmed after Wicklow's late late show to defeat of Carlow in the other group game.

Laois lost out on a scoreline of 3-11 to 2-13 in a game which Laois led for parts. It was a reversal of last year's preliminary quarter-final which Laois won in Enniskillen. MORE BELOW PICTURE.

It was nip and tuck between the two teams for most of the match but the game turned in Fermangh's favour with 22 minutes gone in the second half when Callum Jones put Fermanagh three points ahead with a goal from a penalty. Fermanagh would score just one more point but the goal did the damage when the final whistle was blown at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park.

They now go through to a preliminary quarter-final to be played at home in Portlaoise on the weekend June 8th/9th.

Their opponents and match details will be confirmed after the preliminary quarter-final draw on Sunday June 2 at 5.40pm as part of Sunday Sport on RTE Radio 1.
