80kmh zones are to become 60km zones

Speed limits will be reduced from 80kph to 60 kph on hundreds of kilometres of roadway across Laois on February 7, 2025.

New speed signs will be put in place across the county ahead of the changes which are part of a national initiative to reduce road deaths but introducing lower speed limits.

Laois County Council Senior Executive Engineer, Philip McVeigh confirmed the 60km zones would replace the 80km zones on local roads by February 7 as directed by the Department of Transport.

Speed limits will drop from 80kph to 60kph on almost 700 kilometres of local roads in the Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District alone, with similar changes to take place on local roads across the county.

The speed reduction is being introduced in phases with local roads being the first to change and a date yet to be announced for national roads which will drop speed limits from 100kph to 80kph on a date yet to be announced. The changes will cover over 2,300 kms of roads in Laois when fully introduced.

Mr McVeigh was asked about the new speed zones by Independent Cllr Aisling Moran

He told the December meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District that February 7 was the new date the council had been given for the installation of all of the new 60kmh signs by the Department. He said the reduction from 100kmh to 80kmh would take place in a second phase.

“So does that mean we can have ramps on roads where we couldn’t get ramps because they were 80kms,” asked Cllr Moran. Mr McVeigh said that ramps could be installed in 50 and 60kph zones.

Cllr Moran asked about her previous requests for cycle lanes which were turned down because they were in 80kmh zones. She wanted to know if these would now be accepted.

Mr McVeigh said anything that currently applies to a 60kph zone will apply to the new 60kph zone.

Cllr Moran welcomed the news and said the TII(Transport Infrastructure Ireland) would be delighted with all the requests for work she would be making.
