Portlaoise Gardaí said people can contact them if they have concerns about elderly or vulnerable people

People are being reminded to check on the elderly and vulnerable as freezing temperatures look set to continue across the county.

Laois Gardaí are asking people to check in on their neighbours, particularly the elderly and the vulnerable during the cold snap. They also offered to check in on people if the neighbours are unable.

“If you have a concern for someone and you think it is urgent we would encourage  you to ring 999. If it is not urgent call the local station,” a Garda Spokesperson said.

He said community gardaí in Portlaoise have already been out to help some people who are alone in the cold weather.

The Garda Spokesperson said some people  may be unable to get provisions such as food and fuel due to the weather conditions.

“Check on your neighbours, be aware of your elderly neighbours. If you have any concerns about a neighbour we are quite willing to do that,” he said.

The number for Portlaoise Garda Station is 057 867 4100.

Meanwhile, Home Instead has issued advice to the elderly on staying safe during the cold weather.

"Despite the extra challenges posed by the weather, with snow and ice making for difficult travelling conditions, it is vital that ageing adults most in need get the support of their community,” according to Home Instead’s National Clinical Lead, Danette Connolly.

“Our Winter Readiness Advice offers six practical tips to help everyone get through the worst of this cold snap,” said Ms Connolly.

These tips include staying connected and having people check on the elderly to make sure they have all they need. Wearing several thin layers of clothing to stay warm and keeping all windows and doors closed. Eating well and staying stocked up on supplies, fuel and prescriptions.

Finally, planning for emergencies such as power cuts by having fuel and non perishable food items at home.
