€3.5 million in active travel grants for Laois projects

Funding will make walking and cycling safer across the county.

Laois has been allocated €3.5 million in active travel grants for projects that will encourage walking and cycling across the county. 


The funding has been approved by the National Transport Authority (NTA). The biggest chunk of funding is going to Portarlington for an active travel scheme worth €675,000 from the station road to canal road. 


Portlaoise is also set to receive a good chunk of the funding for a number of projects in the county town including €330,000 for staff costs at Laois County Council's Active Travel Office.


 €650,000 has been allocated for the second phase of  Triogue Way, Portlaoise. This is part of the construction of a shared, pedestrian and cycle route from The People’s Park off Timahoe Road to Green Mill Lane, off the Ridge Road.


The Borris Road, Portlaoise has been allocated €300,000 for an Active Travel Scheme while the Dublin Road, Portlaoise has been allocated €35,000.


€20,000 has been allocated for an Active Travel Link from Triogue Way to N80 Stradbally Road, Portlaoise.


Under the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Programme  St Paul's NS, Mountmellick will receive €50,000, EMO NS will get €60,000 and St Fiac's NS, Graiguecullen has been granted €60,000.  


 Other projects include a permeability scheme for Mountmellick (€300,000), a cycling assessment  of Graiguecullen  (€75,000) and a permeability scheme for Portarlington (€25,000).


Also in Portarlington €170,000 has been allocated for junction tightening and pedestrian crossing works at Canal Road/R420 Bracklone Street.


Junction tightening and pedestrian crossing works will also take place in Shanahoe where €170,000 has been granted and Stradbally which has been granted €60,000 of the funding. 

Laois County Council has been allocated a further €500,000 under the bus stop enhancement progamme.
