In 2024 there were 16 farm inspections in Laois.
The number of farm inspections that took place in Laois last year has fallen dramatically, according to figures from the Health and Safety Authority (HSA).
In 2024 there were 16 farm inspections in Laois, down 43% from 2023's figure of 28 inspections. This is down from 59 inspections recorded in the county in 2022, a 73% drop in two years.
The figures were released following a parliamentary question by Deputy Réada Cronin who asked the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment at the time the number of farm safety inspections that have taken place in each county over the past three years.
The then Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Emer Higgins said, "farming continues to be one of the most dangerous sectors in which to work".
"The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) continues rolling out its Farm Safety Action Plan 2021- 2024 which aims to reduce the level of fatalities, serious injuries and ill health in the agriculture sector. The Plan focuses on high-risk activities particularly around the use of tractors and other farm vehicles, livestock handling and working at height. It also aims to improve farmer skill levels around risk identification and management," the then Minister added.
A total of 1171 inspections were carried out in farms across the country last year.
Cork had the highest number of inspections in total, it went from having 5 inspections in 2021 to having 632 inspections in 2024.
Waterford had the lowest number of inspections, with 25 inspections in the last 3 years. It had only one inspection last year.
The grand total of inspections from 2021 to 2024 on all farms in the country was 3,842 inspections.
The Farm Safety Partnership Advisory Committee was established to involve industry stakeholders in improving occupational safety and health in agriculture.
