Laois Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a driver crashed into the forecourt of a Portlaoise shop and fled the scene of the incident on the busy Mountmellick Road.
The incident happened Victor's Superstore / Laois Eco Fuels on the N80 Mountmellick Road at about 3.30pm on Bank Holiday Monday, February 3.
A witness told the Leinster Express / Laois Live that after leaving the road at speed the car ploughed into a concrete block pillar veered across the entrance. It completely demolished the first pillar and partially demolished a second wall before ending up in the middle of a car park just over a metre from the shop door.
Fortunately, there were no cars, customers or staff in car park of what is a busy shop and fuel suppliers at the time. However, the witness who spoke to the Leinster Express said a vehicle had been parked in a space just before the crash happened.
A Laois Offaly Garda Division spokesperson confirmed details of the incident and told the Leinster Express / Laois Live that the driver left on foot before Gardaí arrived at the scene. While, Gardaí say are looking for a driver, the witness said a female was also in the car at the time of the crash.
The car was not recorded as a stolen vehicle and an investigation is underway to trace the owner.
Witnesses to the crash or anyone with dashcam or other footage, is asked to contact Portlaoise Garda Station on 057 8674122.
