A badly needed new staff car park at Portlaoise hospital is complete but it cannot be used until a pedestrian crossing is installed.

The HSE confirmed to the Leinster Express / Laois Live said the new Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise carpark will be located opposite the entrance gates to the hospital on the town's Block Road. The HSE said it will have barriers, CCTV and lighting.

"The aim of the new carpark is to facilitate more parking for visitors/patients in the main hospital carpark. There will be a pedestrian crossing from the new carpark to the hospital which will be added under the direction of Laois County Council," said the HSE.

The work on the car park is now complete but the next step requires the green light from County Hall before contractors can hand it over to the HSE for use by staff. MORE BELOW PICTURE.

"The contractors are awaiting a licence from Laois County Council. Once the licence is received, works to create the pedestrian crossing will commence," said the HSE.

A spokesperson added that there are 107 car parking spaces which will be free for staff. The car park is on lands attached to the St Fintan's Hospital campus beside the National Ambulance Service hub which is located opposite the entrance to the hospital.

The car park is the latest expansion of car parking at the Laois hospital which has been the subject of extensive redevelopment in recent years.

Plans submitted to County Hall in 2020 proposed the addition of 240 within the existing hospital site. Despite this, parking has remained a problem for staff, patients and visitors.
