A health and safety problem with a HSE store in Laois where vital equipment for children was kept, could be about to be solved.

At the end of 2024 the parent of a child with a disability labelled as 'scandalous' a situation which saw equipment gather 'cobwebs' in an inaccessible store for years in Mountmellick.

She outlined the situation at the MDA in Irishtown to the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

"Nobody has been in or out of the building for three years so nobody has access. That equipment is in extreme demand so every individual who needs equipment is being purchased, but if you don't have a medical card you fall through the cracks," said the mum.

The HSE confirmed to the Leinster Express / Laois Live at that time that, due to a health and safety issue within HSE Therapy Stores there has been reduced access to equipment located on the mezzanine floor of the building. It said however that stock held in these premises for paediatric services are recycled aids and appliances only.

It has now emerged that the HSE appears to have decided to fix the problem.

It has invited companies to bid for the contract to carry out internal alteration works to the existing HSE Occupational Therapy Stores, Unit 10, MDA Business Park, Mountmellick.

This will involve the removal of the existing steel frame mezzanine structure and lift, removal and replacement of steel frame racking, the provision of structural supports to the existing full height masonry wall between store and office accommodation.

The work will also involve alterations to the existing decontamination area, replacement of fire exit doors and provision of new lighting throughout the store area, together with all associated works.

It hopes to get the work done within three months after the tender process is complete.
