A Laois Councillor has alleged that people are 'taking stones' from an old bridge near Rathdowney, leading to the bridge falling into disrepair.

Fine Gael Cllr John King has called for immediate action from the Council.

"This bridge is close to Bealady cemetery, and people use it as a walking route," Cllr King said.

"At different times, a few stones have disappeared. I suppose people might take a fancy to a stone that was cut by a stonemason in days gone by," he said.

"In order to stop the stones disappearing, the quicker the repairs are done the better."

This motion was seconded by fellow Fine Gael Cllr Conor Bergin.

Mr Rory O'Callaghan, Senior Engineer for Laois County Council, replied that repairs to Beechmount Bridge on the L-5535 will commence in July 2025.

Cllr King welcomed this news.

"I know we have funding, so I am pleased to hear that this will start in July," he finished.
