Laois Offaly catch 20 intoxicated, 45 uninsured and 364 speeding drivers each month

Laois Offaly Gardaí detected an average of 20 intoxicated drivers, 45 uninsured and 364 speeding motorists every month from May 2024 to June 2025. 

The figures, released in the latest Garda Commissioner’s Monthly Report, give a breakdown of recorded traffic offences during the 13 month period. Gardaí arrested a total of 186 drunk drivers, or 13 a month, and 96 drug drivers, averaging seven per month, during the specified time.  

According to the figures released by the Garda Commissioner, there were 15,282 breath tests performed on drivers to test for alcohol averaging ,1092 per month. A further 313 oral fluid tests were carried out to test for the presence of drugs during the same period. 

The data revealed gardaí in Laois Offaly seized 45 cars a month during the timeframe from uninsured motorists. In total, there were 626 vehicles seized from uninsured drivers in just over a year. 

A whopping 5,089 drivers were caught speeding in the two counties during the same time. GoSafe speed cameras detected 3,192 of the drivers, catching on average 228 drivers a month. A further 1,897, or 136 speeders a month, were detected by gardai. 

Meanwhile, an average of 66 people were caught using mobile phones while driving in Laois/Offaly every month. In total, 928 motorists were detected using mobile phones behind the wheel during the 13 months. The figures were compiled using the garda PULSE and the FCPS system.

They recorded the number of vehicles detained for not having tax, an NCT or for a driver being an unaccompanied learner were also published. Gardaí noted that while the seizures are recorded in these categories, the vehicles may have been seized for multiple offences. 

In total 177 leaner drivers had vehicles seized during the 13 month period, an average of 13 per month. A total 472 vehicles were seized, an average of 34 a month,  for not having tax and 231 vehicles, or 17 a month, were seized for not having NCT.
