Conor McGregor who is seeking support to run as a candidate for the Irish presidency.
Notorious ex MMA fighter Conor McGregor is among a number of presidential hopefuls who have contacted Laois County Council to seek support to run as a candidate.
The former fighter is understood to have written to the local authority to ask for information about an upcoming meeting with Laois councillors.
Laois County Council will give five minutes to every candidate hopeful to make their case, in a special meeting on Monday, September 15.
To run as a candidate, a person must have the backing of four local authorities or 20 Oireachtas members.
Other people expected to speak in the Laois meeting include businessman Gareth Sheridan, former solicitor Nick Delahanty, ex Dragons Den Peter Casey who was a runner-up in the last presidential election, anti-same-sex marriage campaigner Maria Steen and Dr Cora M Stack.
Up to 14 people are said have contacted the Laois local authority.
Laois County Council told the Leinster Express / Laois Live that a final list will be confirmed in coming days.
"A special meeting of Laois County Council is scheduled to take place on Monday 15th September 2025 at 2.00 pm to facilitate potential candidates to address the elected members of the Council.
"Requests from potential candidates to address this meeting are currently being collated. Further details in relation to same will issue later this week."
However Laois County Council may not back any candidate at all. Of the 19 councillors, the majority are Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, who may together vote down any candidate proposed by the other councillors.
The Cathaoirleach Cllr Barry Walsh, Fine Gael spoke to the Leinster Express / Laois Live.
"Everyone will be given their five minutes to speak but they will need a proposer and a seconder. Michael D Higgins has been a great ambassador for Ireland, it will definitely be hard shoes to fill," he said.
