A Councillor was “baffled” that traffic wasn’t stopping at a junction where a number of crashes have occurred.

Fianna Fail Cllr Paschal McEvoy requested works at the junction in Timahoe in the interest of safety.

Cllr McEvoy tabled a motion asking: “That Laois County Council install ramps at Kerrs Corner, Timahoe. There have been a number of accidents at this location recently.”

He said people don’t stop at the junction. “There was one(an accident) there in the last two weeks. Somebody is going to be killed there,” he remarked.

Senior Executive Engineer, Tom Drennan, read a written response from a Council Road Design Engineer.

He said “Road Design will meet with Cllr Paschal McEvoy at this location. All traffic calming measures including additional signage, line marking and ramps will be assessed.”

Cllr McEvoy said some sort of solution will need to be arrived at. “I am baffled as to how people don’t stop. They just drive straight through there,” he said.

He described the location as a “black spot” in relation to motorists failing to stop.

Fianna Fail Cllr Padraig Fleming seconded the motion and said he had witnessed the driver behaviour first hand. “I have seen these type of incidents happening,” he said.

The issue was discussed at the monthly meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.
