Laois homeless figures almost almost double in a year

Homeless figures on the rise.

The number of people recorded as homeless in Laois last month has almost doubled in comparison to this time last year.
The latest figures from the Department of Housing show there were 47 people recorded as homeless in Laois in August, up from just 24 in August 2024.

The number of people availing of emergency accommodation from the local authority in Laois during the week of August 25 to 31 fell slightly from 50 the previous month in July.

Across the midlands there were 52 families in local authority emergency accommodation. This included 66 adults and 105 children.

There were 201 adults availing of emergency accommodation across the midlands during the week recorded in August. The majority were aged between 25 to 44 (110). There were 58 people aged between 45 and 64 and there were three people aged over 65 homeless in the region.

Nationally the number of people in emergency accommodation increased last month to a record 16,353 people.

According to the latest figures from the Department of Housing, 11,208 adults and 5,145 children were in emergency accommodation in August.
