Traffic calming requested near busy rural Laois school

Ratheniska National School

Traffic calming has been requested around a busy rural school in Laois

Fine Gael Cllr Vivienne Phelan requested the road safety measures for Ratheniska National School in a motion to the Council.

She asked: “That Laois County Council install traffic calming measures outside Ratheniska NS”.

In response, Senior Executive Engineer, Tom Drennan said  “Laois County Council will arrange to meet with Cllr Phelan on site to review and identify the area and will arrange for a technical assessment to be carried out. If traffic calming measures are subsequently deemed to be a necessary intervention, this will be subject to available budgetary resources.”

Cllr Phelan said there was a need for traffic calming measures at the school.

Fianna Fail Cllr Padraig Fleming said “at different times it is a shocking busy area” as he seconded Cllr Phelan’s motion.

The issue was discussed during the latest meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.
