Big drive to expand solar power in Ireland.
Just under 5% of households in Laois received a grant for solar panels between 2020 and June 2025 but €16 m has been spent by households on panels, according to new research.
The EnergyEfficiency.ie analysis, based on SEAI and Census data, shows steady growth in solar PV adoption in the county, with 1,392 grants awarded in total. Of those, nearly 490 installations were completed in 2024, compared to just 62 in 2020.
Between 2020 and June 2025, the average home solar system size in Laois increased from 3.91 kWp to 6.31 kWp, which is around 14 solar panels.
Under the SEAI’s Solar PV Scheme, some €3.15 m was awarded to Laois homeowners, with households in the county investing almost €16 m in solar systems, including battery storage. The total grant-assisted solar capacity in Laois reached 7,600 kWp by June 2025.
A total of 4.47% received a grant for solar panels between 2020 and June 202
Nationally, more than 81,000 Solar PV Scheme grants were awarded, with Irish households investing over €914 million in solar.
Briain Kelly of www.EnergyEfficiency.ie commented in a statement to the Leinster Express / Laois Live.
“Our analysis shows that solar uptake has risen sharply despite reductions in grants over the past two years. Falling installation costs, rising energy prices, and greater awareness of solar’s benefits are among the factors driving this change,” he said.
He claimed that homeowners with solar can save over €1,000 a year on their energy bills.
EnergyEfficency.ie claims to be one of Ireland's biggest solar installers.
