Laois Gardaí urged people to discuss the dangers of fireworks with children as they displayed some of the fireworks seized in recent days.
“As part of Operation Tombola, Gardaí on routine patrol in Portlaoise seized a considerable quantity of fireworks from a number of youths in separate incidents in the Kilminchy and Clonrooske areas,” Gardaí stated on social media.
Gardaí warned that fireworks are illegal to possess or use without a licence, and every year people suffer life-changing injuries because of them. They can also cause significant distress to older people, pets, and livestock.
They seized the fireworks during patrols ahead of Halloween.
“These seizures highlight the proactive work of Gardaí across Laois–Offaly in keeping our communities safe in the run-up to Halloween.
Parents and guardians are again asked to know where your children are, speak to them about the dangers of fireworks, and remind them that they’re not harmless fun — they’re explosives,” Gardai warned.
"Our patrols will continue throughout the coming days as part of Operation Tombola to help ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween for everyone. If you witness fireworks being used or sold illegally, please contact your local Garda Station," Gardaí stated.
