Issue raised at a meeting in Portlaoise.

Residents have to reverse cars on public road for a distance to allow big vehicles to pass, a Laois councillor has claimed.

Fine Gael Cllr Vivienne Phelan made the claim in a motion that called on Laois County Council to install a layby on the L3813 at The Heath to allow cars to pull in when meeting heavy goods vehicles.

She said there a lot of heavy goods vehicles in the area and residents who meet them on the road have to reverse for a distance to allow them to pass.

In reply, Senior Executive Engineer, Tom Drennan said the Council would carry out an assessment and consider the merits for a layby on this section of road. He added that the Municipal District Engineer coould meet Cllr Phelan on site as part of this assessment.

The motion was seconded by Fianna Fail Cllr Paschal McEvoy at the monthly meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.
