Problems with illegal dumping in Laois were raised at the November meeting of Laois County Council.

At the meeting, a number of councillors voiced their concerns with illegal dumping and general issues regarding rubbish collection in the county.

Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley expressed that dumping is "unfair" on council staff cleaning up the mess and the residents living near it. She was speaking in relation to illegal dumping at the back of Birchgrove housing estate in Portlaoise which she previously discussed at the November meeting of the Portlaoise MD.

Cllr Dwane Stanley urged that the issue be addressed as it is costing the taxpayer a fortune on clean ups.

On the topic of litter, Cllr Ollie Clooney added that more advertising of the Kyletalesha Landfill in Portlaoise could help alleviate the issue as he himself was unaware of some of the information regarding the opening times of the landfill or whether or not they take cash or card.

He said: "It won't eliminate illegal dumping but it could cut it down." Cllr Clooney added that people are taking a chance with dumping illegally and more knowledge on the services available could help.

Kyletalesha Landfill is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 3.30pm and Saturday from 8am to 1pm. Price information is also available on Laois County Council's website.

Additionally, Cllr Ben Brennan raised the idea of hosting mattress collection days in the Crettyard area to combat the dumping of mattresses in the forestry.

The council said that hosting mattress collections in each municipal district is certainly worth looking at.
