Laois County Council have commenced roadworks on the busy L3930 approach road to Vicarstown from the M7 motorway following years of flooding issues.

Flooding on the road has been a persistent issue in recent years, with flooding extending almost half the width of the road at times of extensive rainfall. Water also regularly pooled near the community centre.

Locals had long expressed their concerns regarding safety on the road. Water has at times turned icy on that stretch of the road during freezing temperatures, heightening safety issues.

Cllr Vivienne Phelan campaigned for work to be done on the road and she has welcomed its commencement in recent days.

Praising the work, the Graiguecullen/Portarlington councillor said: "I am delighted to see this work proceeding in recent days by the roads department, following my representations. I am grateful to the local residents who highlighted this issue, and it is a good example of residents working with their local representative to achieve improvements locally.

"I am looking forward to the completion of the works in the coming days and I would like to thank the roads team for their continued hard work."

She continued: "Surface water flooding is an issue which becomes more apparent throughout the Municipal District when the weather becomes wetter. Flooding may pose a danger to traffic and can be an inconvenience to other road users.

"I was pleased to be able to support this project through the Community Projects (Elected Members) Fund 2025. I would encourage any residents who are impacted by similar issues in the MD to reach out to me to discuss, and I will arrange to meet on site."
