Laois TD and Minister for Foreign Affairs & Trade Charlie Flanagan, has expressed thanks to all who worked hard over Christmas dealing with floods.
While Laois escaped the worst of the floods, up to five houses were flooded, and as many as 4o threatened, kept at bay by fire crews, volunteers and homeowners who worked night and day.
“The recent weather conditions have been very difficult for many and I wish to express my appreciation to everyone who worked diligently to ensure that Laois was not more worse affected by the recent flooding ,” Minister Flanagan said.
“In particular, I wish to express my thanks to the staff of Laois County Council, Civil Defence volunteers, members of the Fire Service and the countless volunteers who worked throughout the county protecting homes and businesses of those affected by the flooding,” he said.
He noted the recently announced government investment of €340 million in flood defences.
“This is more than has been invested in the previous 20 years. Funding is also provided through the Department of Social Protection for flood damaged households and a new scheme has been established providing up to €20,000 for uninsured business premises which have been flood damaged,” he said
