Urgent repair works are needed on a popular walking route in a Laois village, according to a local councillor.

Cllr Seamús McDonald has appealed to Laois County Council to carry out repairs on a bridge along the L6004 at Scaroon, Clonaslee.

The road and bridge is used by "hundreds of walkers" every weekend, the Fianna Fáil councillor told the council at the meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory / Mountmellick MD on Wednesday, March 11.

"There's a huge hole in the centre of it, someone is going to fall into it," he argued.

Laois County Council agreed that sections of the bridge have collapsed.

The Area Office will carry out a full engineering inspection on the bridge to determine the extent of structural works needed and to apply to the department for funding.

Cllr McDonald said he hopes the issue is dealt with as soon as possible.

This is the second bridge that was brought to attention of Laois County Council at the MD meeting.

Cllr McDonald also highlighted the need for repair works on Finn's Bridge in Rosenallis.
