Plans have been drawn up for the restoration of a historic Poormans Bridge near Abbeyleix.

Laois County Council is seeking the goahead from An Bord Pleanála for works on the seven-arch limestone road bridge over River Nore which dates to the 18th century.

The council wants to repoint piers, arches, abutments and spandrel walls as necessary. Soft verges will be removed and  rubbing strips to be installed.

Other work includes the installation of tie bars at the quarter points of all spans. Tree stumps are to be poisoned.

Poormans Bridge is a Protected Structure. In January 2017, €220,000 was set aside bridge rehabilitation works and Colt Railway Bridge.

An Bord Pleanála may give approval for the development with or without conditions, or may refuse the application for development.

A Natura Impact Statement prepared in respect of the proposed development will be available for inspection at Laois County Council Offices, in Portlaoise.
