Long shopping list for Ballyfin cemetery but nothing purchased

Gates, railings, plinths and paths for the old and new St Fintan’s cemeteries in Ballyfin.

That was Cllr Paddy Bracken’s shopping list at a Laois County Council Municipal District meeting .

He complained: “My understanding is that this was costed. But nothing has happened.”

Senior Executive Engineer Paul McLoughlin said the Council was conducting a countywide survey of its cemeteries to identify the works required.

Cllr Bracken: “We are gone beyond a survey.” He said the gate was a health and safety issue.

Cllr Seamus McDonald: “A voluntary committee have done trojan work out there. It’s a disgrace out there.”

Director of Services Donal Brennan complimented the committee on its work.

Cllr Brendan Phelan agreed with the proposed survey of all graveyards.

Meanwhile, Cllr David Goodwin called for repairs to Knocknakearn Road, Ballyfin at the same Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick meeting.

Senior Executive Engineer Paul McLoughlin said the Council would assess the location and schedule repairs as required.
