Exciting new 'Laois Camino' walking festival to explore the county
Laois is set to host a brand new and exciting walking experience just in time to get outdoors and actively exploring the county ahead of the Christmas season.
The Laois Camino is a five-year plan launched to unveil the heritage, woodlands, bogs, water and mountains of the county.
Everyone is welcome to take part in the journey and can choose their distance, either 5km, 10km or 20km and walking leaders will be available to help everyone to get the most from their walk. The Laois Camino is perfect for those who want to switch off for a while, get some fresh air and exercise.
The first Laois Camino will take place in Timahoe and will unveil heritage in the area. There will be walks to suit everyone on the day with a 5km, 10km and 20km. All walks will meet at Timahoe Heritage Centre at 10 am on Sunday, December 9, with the walks, starting at 10.15 am sharp. The first 5 km is a flat surface with occasional moderate incline and decline.
The 10km and 20km is mountain terrain, with moderate to strenuous inclines. Walking sticks will be available and good footwear and socks are essential.
Majella Fennelly is the coordinator of SVT Community and Activity Wellness Hub, where the idea was born.
"The Laois Camino is unique in the sense that it is going to be a floating Camino in that it will move every year to a different section of Laois unveiling the county as the years go by.
"We will be visiting heritage, bogs and water, woodlands and Slieve Bloom Mountains. Laois Sports Partnership, Laois Walking Festival and Laois Tourism are behind it and we have a new committee for Laois Camino, it is an idea in my head for the last three or four years coming into fruition," she said.
5KM – €5 (Includes tea & coffee in the Timahoe Corner Shop)
