THE domestic waste collection industry is in ‘serious need of regulation’ according to Sinn Féin spokesperson on the Environment, Community and Local Government, Brian Stanley TD.
Responding to the news that a receiver has been appointed to Greenstar Recycling, Deputy Stanley has demanded that Minister Phil Hogan intervene and introduce the long awaited regulations.
He added, “Greenstar is a major player in the waste industry employing 800 people. To simply shut up shop is unacceptable. The chaos this brings is a result of unregulated privatisation. I have raised the need for regulations on a number of occasions.
“On each occasion Minister Hogan recycled his mantra that regulations would soon be published. To date no regulations have even been drafted let alone published. Such light touch regulation has been the hall mark of consecutive governments.”
