A national rent scheme to clarify whether tenants or Laois County Council will pay the new property tax is to be issued this spring.
Cllr Jerry Lodge does not want the tax to be “landed on tenants”.
“They are at the bottom of the pile, we have to make sure they are not treated unfairly,” he said.
LCC have over 2,000 rented units, which could cost them €100,000 in property tax this year, and double that next year. However no money has been set aside in the council budget for the tax.
