Portlaoise public representative Cllr Kathleen O’Brien wants Laois County Council to remove the taxi rank between the Kyle Centre and Laois Shopping Centre, and put up a ‘no parking’ sign instead.
“I have never seen a taxi there, cars are jutting out, they should remove the whole parking area, that would solve it. There’s two carparks there, plenty of space, it’s just laziness on their part. I know people have been fined, but I think there should be no parking there whatsoever,” she said.
Gardaí have also raised their concerns about road safety at the Kylekiproe rank, according to Pat Delaney from the council’s roads section.
“There is a serious road safety concern from people parking at this location. A No Parking sign will not deter people, Removing a taxi rank will need a change in the Taxi Rank Bye-Laws. We also have had numerous calls from taxi drivers who use the rank, ” he said.
Mr Delaney said the issue would be dealt with further at a Parking Bye-Laws meeting later this month.
Chairperson Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald said the area was “a good spot for a taxi rank”.
“It’s just that people park there illegally, especially vans, jutting out. I think better signs warning that people could be fined would be enough. Before the meeting we could meet someone from the taxi companies,” she suggested.
Cllr Caroline Dwane said the signs were too small.
“Maybe I need to go to specsavers but I don’t think the signs are good there, the taxi sign is quite small, “I have had taxi drivers asking me if it is a rank, so there is clearly a problem with signs. Fines are being dished out but people are parking recklessly too,” she said.
