Mountmellick’s Labour councillor Lisa Delaney lost out, but will not “jump ship”.
“Labour gave me an opportunity when Pat Bowe passed away thatI would never have otherwise gone for. Times are tough but you can’t just jump ship, we will lick our wounds,” she said.
Ms Delaney, 27, is secretary to Labour Senator John Whelan. Her campaign was at times emotional with the recent death of her father Paddy.
“I hope he is very proud. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do, Mam was my rock. It was a good campaign overall, I didn’t really get a Labour backlash, I was Lisa Delaney knocking on doors, people want to see young people in politics, and young women,” said Lisa, who will now focus on planning her wedding and voluntary work in her area.
