Mountmellick United FC are to buy half a hectare of land from Laois County Council, for €6,500, as agreed by county councillors at their July monthly meeting.

Mountmellick’s councillor Paddy Bracken proposed to sell the land next to Conor Davis Park, seconded by Cllr David Goode.

“I would like to thank Gerry Murphy and Michael Rainey on behalf of the club for accommodating them. They had this land leased for a number of years and it is hugely important to acquire it,” Cllr Bracken said.

The club are putting out an appeal for 65 interest-free loans of €100 each from individuals and groups in the local community to pay for the land, which will be developed as a training facility.
