Seven out of the thirteen public reps who are on the Joint Policing committee in Portlaoise did not attend last Tuesday’s quarterly meeting, including TDs Sean Fleming and Charlie Flanagan, and town councillors Jerry Lodge, Tom Jacob and Rotimi Adebari.
Only one member of the public attended, and no questions were submitted, despite an advertisement placed in local newspapers on November 12.
Chairman of Portlaoise Town Council Willie Aird says the low response is due to effective community policing in each town area.
“They probably could do with more advertising. People liaise with the community Gardaí who deal with their area, a close relationship has built up,” he said.
Superintendent Yvonne Lundon, acompanied by Inspector Declan Dunne and Sgt Tom Walton, listed recent crime figures and delivered a message on shopping safety and safe driving over the Christmas, thanking the local press for their support.
