Cllr Alan Hand is calling on Laois voters to vote yes to the children’s rights referendum.
“The proposed constitutional change represents an important step forward which affirms for the first time in the constitution that children have rights,” he said. “It establishes that the best interests of the child are paramount in all matters concerning the child, and that the view of the child must be heard in all judicial cases concerning care, adoption, guardianship, custody and access.”
Cllr Hand went on to point out that the referendum will ensure that the State will have the duty and the power to intervene on behalf of all children at risk, regardless of their parents’ marital status. It will also allow for the adoption of any child regardless of the marital status of their birth parents, affording them full integration into a loving family relationship.
“In my view it is important that we put in place this constitutional change regarding children’s rights,” he said.
