Charlie Flanagan and Leo Varadkar in Portlaoise
Laois Offaly Fine Gael TD Charlie Flanagan has announced his intentions on whether to contest the next general election.
Speaking this Friday, April 8 next to Tánaiste Leo Varadkar in Portlaoise on a business visit, Deputy Flanagan confirmed he intends to again seek re-election.
"I've been really privileged to have had the opportunity of standing in nine general elections and to have been elected by the people of Laois Offaly. I felt that particularly during the week when we had the historic and unprecedented Dáil and Seanad session with the President of Ukraine. How privileged I was to have been put in my seat there by the people. Yes I very much look forward to serving the people of Laois Offaly into the future. And that includes my tenth general election, whenever that might be," he said.
Dep Flanagan has in the past served as Minister for Children, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Justice. He was in the storm of a controversey over the proposed holding of a commemoration for former members of the RIC in early 2020.
While re-elected to the Dáil in 2020, he was not reappointed to cabinet by the new Taoiseach Micheál Martin.
Dep Flanagan and Tánaiste Leo Varadkar along with Canadian Ambassador Nancy Smith, visited Canadian company Greenfield Global's new Portlaoise base at the IDA Business Park to raise awareness of Laois as an ideal place for multinationals to locate.
